Nurse practitioner
A nurse practitioner is an independent health professional responsible for his/her own actions and with diagnostic and pharmacological knowledge.
The role of our nurse practitioner is to support the work of our doctors as well as working closely with our practice nurses and other health professionals to manage the health and welfare of our patients. She is here every week day except Thursdays, and is specially trained to deal with a wide variety of health problems and minor injuries, seeing patients of all ages who need a same-day or urgent appointment on a 'walk in basis' (no pre-booked appointments). One of our GPs is always available to support the Nurse Practitioner in her work and to provide prescriptions if needed.

Advanced Nurse Practitioner | Jane qualified as an RGN in 1984 and worked as a staff nurse in ITU and coronary care before becoming a practice nurse in 1992. She worked in several local GP surgeries before joining us in 2001. Jane graduated as a Nurse Practitioner from London South Bank University in March 2008, having worked as a trainee NP here at Wye under the mentorship of Dr. Jolyon Miles and our previous NP Jacqui Davis. Jane enjoys the diversity of practice nursing and has a special interest in diabetes, travel health and respiratory nursing. | |

Practice nurses
The role of our practice nurses is to work closely with our doctors and nurse practitioner to provide a wide range of medical services. These may include dressings, minor injuries, taking blood samples, monitoring chronic diseases like asthma, diabetes blood pressure as well as family planning, travellers’ health and children’s immunisations.

Lead practice nurse | Julie qualified as a Registered General Nurse (RGN) in 1982 and worked in orthopaedics before training to be a psychiatric nurse. On moving to North Wales she undertook her midwifery training and qualified in 1986 and practiced as a midwife until 1992. Julie became a practice nurse in 1992 and stayed in this field for 5 years. Having moved to Kent in 2001, she joined the nursing team at Wye Surgery in July 2002. | | |

District nurses
The role of a district nurse is to see patients in the community and carry out a wide range of procedures.
Our district nurses are based at the surgery and work closely with our doctors. They provide treatment at home which includes caring for people with long term conditions and nursing the chronically sick or terminally ill. They also offer advice about care and convalescing following discharge from hospital and may dress wounds and administer medication.

Health visitor
A health visitor is a qualified nurse who has undergone a further period of training to enable her to work with families and to advise them how to avoid illness and to keep healthy.

Health visitor | Our health visitor is linked to the surgery and works with doctors, the midwife and liases with other community health practitioners. The health visitor can visit you at home, see you by appointment in the surgery or in the local childrens centre. | |

Midwife
A midwife is a nurse with special training in ante-natal and post-natal care and childbirth.
We have a Midwife who visits the surgery and works with our doctors, nurses and health visitor to help you during your pregnancy and labour, and in the weeks following your childbirth. Depending on your situation you may see the midwife in your home, at hospital or Wye Surgery

Healthcare assistants
The role of a healthcare assistant is to see patients and carry out a wide range of procedures, as well assisting our practice nurses in the day to day running of clinics and treatment rooms.

HC assistant | Mandy has worked at Wye Surgery for 18 years. She is the senior HCA and has NVQ3 in health and social care. Mandy worked previously as a district nurse for 14 years, and runs a fortnightly exercise class (Extend) for the over 60’s. The GP’s refer patients to the class. Mandy also assists with the Vasectomy and Gynaecology clinics which are held at the surgery. | |

She also works 3 days a week assisting the nurses and doctors as necessary. Elaine has NVQ2 in Care and has done the Knowledge and Skills in Primary Care (KaSPaC) course which is for health care assistants working in primary care. | |

Physiotherapist
The role of a physiotherapist is help people gain optimum mobility during or after an illness, injury or surgery or resulting from postural or occupational health problems. Our physiotherapist is based at the surgery and you can make an appointment for treatment after referral from your doctor.

MSCP SRP | Diana, our resident physiotherapist, qualified at the Royal London Hospital in 1978 and is a member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists. Since then she has gained a wealth of experience and has specialised in Intensive Care Therapy, General Surgery and Outpatients. At Wye Surgery, Diana helps our patients regain mobility and ease painful joints and muscles caused by illness or disability, as well as rehabilitation following sports injuries. She may also be able to help alleviate physical problems such as headaches, stiff necks and back pain. | |

Psychological Therapy
Mental health care in GP surgeries is contracted out to IAPT therapists,and we have two highly- trained practitioners based at the surgery. They work with people experiencing a range of emotional difficulties to help them bring about effective change and enhance their psychological wellbeing. You can make an appointment to see them via a referral from your doctor.
| | | Claire Goulding Counsellor | Claire specialises in a form of therapy known as CBT that focuses on dealing with the symptoms of depression and anxiety based conditions and helping people understand and change their behaviour. She has worked in Mental Health for many years and prior to taking up this post was the Director of Young Person's Services in East Kent. CBT therapy in a GP surgery can take place over several months, and her special interests are in alleviating the disabling symptoms of high-level anxiety states and chronic depression, so that people can improve their self-worth and engage more satisfyingly in society. | |

Phlebotomist
Our Phlebotomist is a specialised clinical support assistant/healthcare scientist who collects blood from patients for examination in laboratories, the results of which provide valuable information to diagnosing illness.
