Medical students

We’re very pleased and privileged to be involved in training the next generation of doctors. The wonderful facilities and range of medical services on offer at Wye Surgery, make it the ideal place to learn.  But of course we couldn’t do it without the support and agreement of our patients.

We carefully arrange student placements so they we can manage their training effectively without it affecting the quality of our patient care.

Each year we usually have an intake of:

  • Final year medical students from Imperial College London – we normally have 4 intakes a year with students coming for for 2-week placements to see how GPs work; and
  • Trainee GPs studying in Kent – Dr Fox is the course organiser for GP training in Canterbury and East Kent, and we will soon be helping to train GP Registrars in their final year.

While on their placement with us, the students normally stay with one of our doctors or our practice manager.

While at the surgery they may sit in with our GPs or other medical and dispensary staff. If so, you will be informed of their presence and you will be asked if you are happy for them to stay during your consultation. We hope you will say yes, but of course you are free to ask them to leave if you prefer.

Before they complete their placements with us, the students must do several consultations on their own - which will be filmed on video. Dr. Fox will discuss each case with the student and agree a management plan. The video is strictly for use by Dr. Fox with the students so he can review and comment on their consultation techniques. Again, your permission will be asked.
